Description of Scarita Belioara Natural Reserve

The initiative to protect the Scarita Belioara Natural Reserve belongs to the academician Alexandru Borza, since the early ai??i??20s, and it was established in 1941. The actial area of the reserve is of 450 ha and it includes Craiul Plain, a limestone plateau situated at over 1,300 m altitude, as well as a region of woods with a mixture of tens of species and spectacular limestone abysses guarding Belioara Posegii Valley. The maximum altitude is 1,382 m, in Scarita Peak. It was named a natural reserve because these places shelter very rare species of plants and animals. Some of them have survived from the cold glacial periods, being found lower than their normal altitude: Ai??(stemless gentian, Gentiana-cupa de calcar, bearberries, mountain avens, Nigritella rubra, Snakeai??i??s head, etc., flowering in May-June), and others remained from the warmer periods of the ice age (e.g. Yellow Soapwort ai??i?? Saponaria Belidifolia ai??i?? with Mediterranean origin).

There are also valuabe forests with secular pines, spruce and larch. On Scarita plateau we cand find junipers, and on the steep slopes and rocks there is the yew (Taxus baccata), protected species. There are also very rare fauna elements, such as certain butterflies and the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), the largest raptor bird in Romania who nests on the abrupt cliffs. The greatest enemy of the reserve is the uncontrolled grazing, which was halted in, when the Ecology and Mountain Club ai???Albamontai??? in Alba Iulia and some NGOs built a fence in order to prevent the entry into the reserve; unfortunately the last year the fence was partially destroyed and the cattle started to graze in the reserve again, generating a lot of damage through stepping onto vegetation and producing manure, which changes the chemical composition of the soil and modifying the vegetation. The cause is the indifference and even the bad intentions of the shepherds who take care of the cattle belonging to Ocolis village and who, although they know it is strictly prohibited to graze in this area, let the cattle in or they send them in themselves.

Runcu Gorge Reserve

The largest morphological penetration of the limestone bridge is given by Runcu Gorge. They are spectacular due to their length of over 1,000 m, and their height (in some places over 450 m). Runcul Gorge ...
